The President’s Cup for Safety Excellence has made another move, this time to the Southwest Louisiana Region.

Acadian Ambulance President Jerry Romero formally presented the cup to employees at their staff meetings on January 16 and 23. CEO Richard Zuschlag made an appearance via Google Hangouts to congratulate and thank the employees at the January 16 presentation, a first in the award’s history!

“I want to thank the employees for having such positive attitudes, for having safer operations, winning the award for all of last year and for having the best safety record in the company for 24 months. We couldn’t do any of this if we didn’t have people in the field that cared about their patients and have this kind of attitude to have a good, safe program,” Richard said.

Each region is ranked using a scorecard that measures Allsafe Driving, Miles Between Counts (MBC), Transports Between Claims (TBC), Miles Between Preventable Incidents (MBI), Patient Preventable Incident Rate (PPIR) and Total Recordable Incidents (TRIR). Credit is also given for employee participation in Acadian’s annual wellness tests and fitness challenges.

The Southwest Louisiana Region almost won in 2013, but their wellness score put them in second place. They doubled their wellness score to 83% in 2014, which put them solidly in first place.

The region has improved their score by 34% since the start of the President’s Cup in 2011, and has placed in the Top 3 regions every year.

“Yes, we have a safety director and we do have supervisors, but you’re in charge of your own safety. You have to watch out for each other. Because you’re doing this, you are meeting and exceeding goals that we have and you all are a safer area,” Jerry said.

Jerry even added some “fighting words” for other regions: “You may be the first district to win two years in a row!”

For 2014, the region scored a total of 4.8, which is the highest by any district since the beginning of the award. They earned Performance Excellence ratings for the categories of MBC, TBC, MBI and PPIR, and earned the Exceeds Expectations rating on TRIR.

Senior Vice President Danny Lennie reiterated what Jerry said, “It starts with each and every one of you. You’ve done it, great job!”

“You guys weren’t just lucky, you followed the process,” Neil Davis, HSE Director, said.

Calcasieu Operations Manager John Dubose had high praise for his team. “This has little to do with me, and a lot to do with you. You guys made a conscious effort to be safe,” he said.

Since 1971, Acadian has provided the highest level of emergency medical care and transportation possible. In the past decade, the company has expanded to include a diverse suite of services in health, safety, security, and transportation. Acadian’s six divisions are Acadian Ambulance Service, Acadian Total Security, Air Med, Executive Aircraft Charter Service, National EMS Academy and Safety Management Systems.
