As outdoor activities continue to grow, Acadian Ambulance encourages hikers and campers to prioritize safety and be prepared before exploring trails.
Hiking and camping are a great way to enjoy the outdoors, but it’s important to plan and stay alert to stay safe. Here are a few safety tips from the National Park Service to keep in mind:
- Plan ahead: Share your route and expected return time with someone. Carry a fully charged phone, map, and compass or GPS, along with a small first aid kit. Take extra precautions if hiking alone.
- Stay together: Hike with a group when possible and let the slowest hiker set the pace.
- Pack rain and/or snow gear and extra clothing: Weather can change frequently and suddenly, and it’s better to be prepared for unexpected cold, wind, or rain.
- Stay hydrated: Bring enough water and high-energy snacks. Don’t drink untreated water. Take regular breaks.
- Respect wildlife: Keep a safe distance from animals and never feed them. Protect your food with animal-resistant containers or by storing food higher up in a tree.
- Follow trail etiquette: Stay on marked trails, yield to uphill hikers, and keep noise to a minimum.
- Protect the environment: Pack all your trash and leave nature as you found it.
Enjoy your hike or camping trip safely and minimize potential risks.
